Maintenance Checklist
Before you agree to take any hired trailer, it will help to have a checklist to guide you when you inspect the trailer. Don’t worry about insulting the company or being rude when you do your inspection, it is just a good business practice and in the long run, it could save you from a lot of heartache and save you money, should things go wrong due to a lack of maintenance and a lack of you checking.
- Rust spots
The most telling giveaway of a trailer that has not been maintained is a nasty rust spot. If the spot is rather small, you don’t need to be too concerned, because rust spots are going to eventually happen on most trailers and even vehicles. But if you spot a really big rust spot, it should be cause for concern because such a big spot can be a weakening in the trailer where a hole can be formed.
- Loose joints
A loose joint, whether it is a part of the trailer body or something closer to the wheel, this can be a very serious issue that can end up causing instability in the trailer which can then result in you losing whatever it is that you are towing. If you notice something is loose, it is best to bring it up with the trailer hire company or select another trailer.
- Damaged tyres
Flat tyres or tyres that are damaged are not a good sign and unless they can be fixed before you hire the trailer, it is important to rather choose a different trailer. Depending on who you are hiring from, the tyres might have a serious issue and as such it would be better to choose another trailer rather than take a chance with something that might be unsuitable.
