Few of us need to own a trailer so it’s best to know what to ask when the need to rent a trailer does arise. Towing a heavy load through traffic in an articulated vehicle is not child’s play – especially if it’s not something you do often.
The Questions to Ask
To avoid last-minute problems when you’re about to relocate your household goods, its best to find out in advance what type and size of trailer you will need and whether your vehicle is suited to towing it.
A trailer is a road-going vehicle in its own right and is licensed separately and these formalities should be effective and up-to-date. You will also need to know whether the trailer you need should be a flatbed (without sides), open (with sides) semi-enclosed or closed. The type of load you are carrying will, to a large extent, determine this. Many smaller, lightweight articles, for instance, are probably better suited to a semi-closed or closed trailer whilst large bulky items, the dimensions of which might extend a bit beyond a trailer’s carrying platform, should be transported on a flatbed trailer. You should also make sure that your tow hitch accommodates the trailer you intend renting and that your hitch’s electrical connections are in good working order and fit for purpose.
You will need to check on the maximum and minimum weight allowances for your intended trailer and take cognisance of how you are likely to pack the trailer. Trailer loads should be evenly loaded each side and the bulk of the weight over the axle if possible. These queries, and the planning of your relocation, are easily addressed by your Newlands Trailers consultant, so don’t be shy to ask.
If you are planning to rent a trailer for the transportation of goods through border posts and into another country, it is prudent to enquire about the documentation required, fees, duties and taxes payable and any insurance implications that might arise. Again, your Newlands Trailer Hire consultant will be able to answer these questions, action the necessary procedures and point you in the right directions.
Lastly, when you commence using the trailer, it is prudent to check whether the tyres of the trailer are inflated to the correct pressure and that the tail, reverse and indicator lights are in good working order.
Happy towing!
